ASK GERBER: WHEN DO I NEED TO HIRE AN ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT?

by Randy Gerber, Founder & Principal

Deciding to hand over the reins is tough and in some cases, impossible. But when it comes time to make this decision, it all really comes down to playing into your strengths.

Just as you can’t be everywhere all the time, you can’t be everything to everyone. This means cutting back on the things at which you aren’t great in order to focus on the things you do best. Remember, the key to integrating your life, business, and wealth lies in doing only what you truly enjoy.

So the answer to this one is easy: almost immediately.

Get over your control issues, find the money (sometimes the administrative assistant will find the money for you), and hire someone to free up your time. Answering the phones, scheduling and confirming the appointments, and dealing with vendors are just a few things that you already know an administrative assistant can do. But they’ll also do the things you should but wouldn’t do for yourself: like setting rules for your calendar or rearranging that personal time instead of scheduling over it.  Don’t worry about keeping them busy: worry about finding the right person for the job. He or she will be able to see where their work is needed.

Still need a little extra convincing? Focus on the fact that all the tiny, but very important details of your life will finally be getting the attention they deserve. Understanding what’s going on in your business and personal lives, your administrative assistant will integrate your time, getting all the facets of your life working in concert with one another instead of in competition with each other.

We’ve all heard it before: from the very beginning of your business, you should make room in your business plan to work on the business, not in it. Hiring an administrative assistant is one solution to removing yourself from this common rut entrepreneurs find themselves stuck in. It gives you the time you need to get ahead of the business and to finally focus on getting exactly where you want to be.
