Journey of Why: It Starts with WHY

By Randall Gerber
Published August 6, 2012

Randall Randy Gerber discusses how Simon Sinek and his book Start with Why led him to identify the why of Gerber, LLCIn 2009 I read Simon Sinek’s Start with Why, a book that resonated so deeply with me that I gave a copy to each member of my team and countless others. You see, for a while, I had been trying to identify whatever ‘it’ is that makes me who I am and my team who they are; and in Sinek’s book, I found my answer. Sinek believes that success isn’t found in what you do but rather in why you do it. He calls this your WHY: I called it the word I had been looking for.

So what’s my WHY? In a word, to improve. In a few more, to succeed in all parts of my life—as a father, husband, entrepreneur, philanthropist, (I’m sure you get the drift)—by creating what doesn’t exist and improving what already does. I do this by asking myself each day, “is what I am doing today getting me where I want to be.” This simple question helps reconcile each of my actions against my big picture goals and holds me accountable for any delays or missteps along the way.

The WHY of Gerber, LLC is a bit different—though it’s a large part of my WHY too. We’re here to be a part of the creation and improvement process first-generation entrepreneurs go through in life. We act as their launch pad for ideas and aspirations; give them guidance for integrating and achieving their life, business, and financial goals; and provide inspiration for paying their success forward. As we see it—better lives and businesses are created by identifying your WHY, and if we can play even a small part in that, then we’ve succeeded.

All of this is why in 2011 we decided to overhaul our look, location, and even the way we do things. We refined what we could, reinvented what we couldn’t, and threw out the rest to better align with our personal and company WHYs. We’ve changed a lot already and will continue to improve as time goes on.

We hope you’ll continue on this journey of WHY with us by reading our blogs. If you would like to be notified when new blogs are posted, follow us on Twitter or join our email list. Next up, you’ll hear from Kori Manus about how all of this connects to the WHY of our friends and clients.
