Gerber Financial Advisors

THE GERBER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

As children we dream big. We reach for the stars in pursuing our passions with no limitations. But as we grow up, following our dreams and making them realities often times falls by the wayside. The first generation entrepreneurs of the world never give up on their dreams, which accredits for a majority of their success.

Rather than forget their young dreams, Maria Bonaventura and Kim Younkin embraced the entrepreneurial bug and chose to pursue their aspirations with a little help from the Gerber, LLC culture. Learn more about two of Gerber’s very own alumni and their journey from Gerber employees to full-time first generation entrepreneurs.

Maria Bonaventura
Gerber Client Services, turned first generation entrepreneur.
Founder & Owner, StageOrganizeStyle.

During her time at Gerber, Maria worked remotely managing the office calendar and scheduling. Working closely with Gerber clients, Maria was able to witness the intriguing and unique lifestyles of our first generation entrepreneur clients.

After managing the calendar for Gerber for 2+ years, tragedy struck in Maria’s life as she was hit with an unexpected illness and suddenly required to leave the workforce. After much needed time off to prioritize her mental and physical health, Maria forced herself to reevaluate her life goals.

Adjusting her focus both personally and professionally, Maria’s driving force was executing her desired quality of life. Maria realized in order to fulfill her passion she needed the ambition and determination to be her own boss, and, with her work at Gerber fresh on her mind, she made the leap.

Maria and her husband now share the entrepreneurial experience, both working as full-time entrepreneurs. Explaining that neither of them are the ‘typical business person’ Maria claims that the entrepreneurial lifestyle is what fits their family best.

“I’m thankful for Gerber,” said Maria. “You can’t help working here and not get inspired,” Maria says about her time at Gerber, identifying a great portion of her new-found courage to pursue entrepreneurism to the Gerber culture.

Kim Younkin
Gerber Relationship Development, turned first generation entrepreneur.
Editing & Writing Professional.

Kim came to Gerber with a very diverse background. Holding experience in both marketing and law, she possessed the ability to talk to people and the knowledge to know what people truly want, a quality Gerber craved.

Before transitioning her professional goals from attorney to Gerber Relationship Development, Kim had very little knowledge of the ins and outs of entrepreneurialism. While she always felt she didn’t ‘fit’ into the typical professional mold, at the beginning of her professional career, she didn’t know there was an alternative.

“No one in my family has ever pursued entrepreneurialism,” said Kim. “Growing up, I wasn’t aware that was an option.”

Kim credits a portion of her ‘AHA entrepreneurial moment’ to her time with Gerber. Interacting with business owner clients who were doing it and seeing Randy living it in the office each day provided Kim with the confidence to follow her own dream of writing and editing full-time, on her own terms.

While she always had a passion for editing prior to her time at Gerber, the idea of owning a business never clicked. After putting the pieces together and deciding to fulfill her personal life mission, Kim left Gerber to follow her creative side. A self-proclaimed ‘word nerd’ Kim claims she’s happiest when it’s simply herself and a book, and that was where she saw herself.

Kim now focuses her career on editing book-length non-fiction works across a range of subjects, including self-improvement, business, and family history projects. After turning her passion into a full-time career, she kicked off her new venture with her first large project, working with one of her mentors, Randy Gerber, as she assisted in editing his first business book to be released in 2014.
