GIFT GIVING FOR THE ENTREPRENEUR-THE ULTIMATE TOUGH PUTT

DECEMBER 15, 2017

As an entrepreneur I have been told a time or two, “your expectations are ridiculously high and you must learn to not force those onto others.” I mainly heard this from my mother around the holiday season as she was asking for gift ideas, but I have a hunch my fellow entrepreneurs get a similar reaction.

It’s safe to say the entrepreneur in your life is likely the hardest to buy for each gifting season. Generally speaking, entrepreneurs tend to have high expectations not only in their business but also in their personal life. The successful business owners can simply go out and buy whatever they want, whenever they want, making finding the “perfect” gift seemingly impossible. Families can be intimidated by having an entrepreneur in the family, or as a close friend, because they don’t want to let the entrepreneur down.

So for that hard-to-buy-for entrepreneur in your life, here are a few gift ideas to make your gift giving a bit more memorable, regardless of their stage in business.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Unique and personalized gifts are some of the most memorable for a successful entrepreneur. Try not to fall into the habit of sending an arbitrary gift to a slew of people (cue the holiday fruit basket), because even though the item arrives at the business owner’s office, it’s not unique to that entrepreneur’s hobbies or interests.

Something as simple as a handwritten note thanking them for an experience or sharing a personal memory about your relationship can be incredibly powerful and a much larger impact. Donating to a charity that is near and dear to an entrepreneur’s personal interests or business purpose is another option for gifting. It’s more about considering the reason for giving the gift and what you’re trying to accomplish versus staying within a specific budget.

Gifting to an emerging (or early-stage) entrepreneur can be a little different ball game. Many times these entrepreneurs are just starting out in their business and enjoy ’shiny and exciting‘ things (think a nice bottle of wine or something else they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves). It’s more of a treat, which can make it a memorable gift.

GIFTING EXPERIENCES

Having the perfect gift doesn’t need to be a “thing.” Entrepreneurs value shared experiences with their friends and family. Try to think outside of the box; gift an experience that an entrepreneur would enjoy based on their hobbies or interests. Be sure to include a handwritten note explaining why you think they would enjoy the experience!

For example, you can’t gift an entrepreneur time away from their business, but instead they could send a gift card to a relaxing experience, such as True REST. A thoughtful experience can allow the business owner to take time out for themselves, especially if the note indicates that they understand he/she is stressed, and they hope the gift can allow some much needed time to relax.

Unfortunately there is no one-size-fits-all equation when it comes to entrepreneur gift giving. Try to focus on what you are trying to accomplish with the gift, versus sending a blanket gift to many.
