GERBER'S TOP FOUR FAVORITE BOOKS FOR ENTREPRENEURS

January 18, 2018

As an entrepreneur inspiration and guidance is often delivered in the wise words of successful entrepreneurs in the form of literature. Some of the “best” entrepreneurial novels get us through the early years in a struggling business. But as we grow, it’s important to look back on the inspiration and best practices that got us here.

To give ourselves, and our businesses, a quick refresh here are the books you should re-read as an established entrepreneur.

 1. BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY
Can you think back to when you first had the idea to start your business? Do you remember the void in the market that you were preparing to fulfill? Today we challenge you to reminisce on that decision and take a look at the market today.

Does your business still align with the “Blue Ocean” strategy or has it veered to “Red Ocean”? We recommend re-reading Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant to evaluate the state of your business in today’s markets compared to the strategy of when you first got started. If you’ve shifted to a red zone, what can you adjust to get back to blue?

2. GREAT BY CHOICE
Has your company been thriving in the face of uncertainty, or even chaos? Do you know why or why not that may be? Take time to re-read Jim Collins’ Great By Choiceto help you answer those questions.

Gerber loves working with first generation entrepreneurs because the entrepreneurial mindset does not pull back in the face of adversity. Consistent growth, as you know, is a marathon, not a sprint. We encourage you to reflect on the significant mile markers you’ve hit and ensure you’re accelerating at a steady pace.

As your business has expanded over the years, have you adjusted your operations and protocols or modified your core values? Consider re-reading Traction, the book that outlines the “Entrepreneurial Operating System” (EOS) for entrepreneurs.

As you know (perhaps a bit too well) business owners can get in the habit of juggling too much (or everything) at once. Tractionuncovers how business owners can alleviate the stressor of operating a business by helping them focus on strategic activities. It is important as a business owner to lead by example and set the tone for your organization- perhaps Traction will refresh you on some key insights to get your wheels turning again on how to best do so.

In wise words of Simon Sinek, “people don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”

When is the last time you reflected upon your why? Has it changed over the years? Re-reading Start With Why will help re-inspire you or reinforce your “purpose” or your “why.” We believe this to be extremely important because often times, the reason behind why you do what you do can define your ability to do it.
