How do I know if I’m a bottleneck in my own company?

Here’s the truth: If decisions get delayed or momentum stalls because of you—you likely are.

Here are some tips for recognizing if you’re a bottleneck and tips for solving it.

  • Pay attention to where work slows: Ask your team: “Are you waiting on me?” If you hear “yes,” that’s a clear sign—you’re creating delays and draining trust.
  • Reflect—are you weighing down decisions? If you’re still approving every detail or involved in non-strategic tasks, your business can’t move forward. You can’t scale by staying in the weeds.
  • Shift from doing to empowering: It’s not about stepping away—it’s about stepping up into leadership. Delegate decisions and roles, then help your team own them.
  • Build processes that free you to lead: Document key decisions, train your team, and set clear accountability. Once systems are in place, the bus stops being your office.

Being aware is the first step. Then, talk to your team, clarify where you can empower them, and work on structures that let you lead instead of block.

At Gerber, we help founders transcend bottlenecks—shifting from individual problem-solver to strategic leader.
